Surgical Intervention

Types of Surgeries Performed by Tipp City Veterinary Hospitaltal

Veterinary surgery involves a range of procedures performed on animals by trained veterinarians. These procedures fall into three broad categories: orthopedic, soft tissue, and emergency surgery. Below are some of the most common types of surgeries performed in veterinary hospitals:

Orthopedic surgeries deal with issues involving bones and joints.

TPLO: Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) is a common surgery for dogs with knee injuries. This procedure reduces the instability in the knee joint by changing the angle of the joint.

Ligament Repair: Ligament repair surgery is performed on animals with torn ligaments. The surgery reinforces the joint by replacing the damaged ligament with a sturdy, artificial one.

Patellar Luxation: Similar to a “trick knee” in humans and relatively common, especially in small dog breeds, the surgical procedure depends on the specific abnormality present. Typically, it includes a sulcoplasty to deepen the trochlear sulcus where the patella rests, realignment of the patellar tendon attachment on the tibia, and adjusting the capsule on either side of the patella based on the direction of the slip. In more severe conditions, more extensive surgery may be necessary to realign the femur and/or tibia.

Fracture Repair: Fracture repair involves realigning broken bones, either through external fixation (splints) or surgical implants (plates, pins, or screws).

Soft tissue surgeries deal with organs, muscles, and other soft tissues.

Spay and Neuter: Spaying and neutering are two common procedures that involve removing the ovaries and testicles of an animal, respectively. These procedures are often recommended for population control.

Ovary/Testicle Sparing Sterilization: We offer ovary and testicle sparing sterilization for dogs. This allows the benefits in some breeds and some dogs of hormones that can maintain muscle mass and personality. We offer individual counseling for the appropriateness of these procedures.

Tumor/Skin Tag Removal: Tumor or skin tag removal is done when an animal has a growth or mass that could potentially be cancerous.

Organ Biopsy: This procedure involves removing a small sample of an organ to test for abnormalities or cancer cells.

Splenectomy: This surgery involves the removal of the spleen and is often necessary to treat conditions such as splenic tumors, severe trauma, or certain blood disorders. Removing the spleen can improve your pet’s quality of life and prevent further complications.

Liver Lobe Ectomy: This procedure entails the removal of a diseased or damaged lobe of the liver. It is commonly performed to treat liver tumors or abscesses, helping to restore liver function and overall health.

Foreign Body Surgery: Pets often ingest foreign objects that can cause obstructions in their gastrointestinal tract. This surgery removes those objects, preventing potentially life-threatening blockages and ensuring the normal flow of digestion.

Mastectomies: This surgery involves the removal of mammary glands and is typically performed to treat or prevent mammary tumors. Early intervention with mastectomies can be life-saving and significantly improve your pet’s prognosis.

Eye Surgery Various eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and eyelid abnormalities may require surgical intervention. Eye surgery can preserve or restore vision and alleviate pain, greatly enhancing your pet’s quality of life.

Ear Surgery: Chronic ear infections, tumors, or congenital issues might necessitate ear surgery. Procedures like total ear canal ablation (TECA) can relieve pain, eliminate infection, and improve hearing function.

Emergency surgery is typically performed in situations where the animal’s life is at risk.

Gastric Dilation Volvulus (GDV) Surgery: GDV, also known as bloat, is a critical condition where the stomach twists, cutting off blood flow. Emergency surgery is essential to untwist the stomach and prevent severe damage or death.

Caesarean Section (C-section) A C-section is a surgical procedure that involves removing puppies or kittens from the mother when natural delivery is not possible.
