There are so many questions about the COVID-19 swirling around on social media, the news, and social circles. Since many of us are at home with our families and pets – one question has risen to the surface. Can pets get Coronavirus ?
The short answer is no. Currently, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention does not have evidence that companion animals, including pets, can spread COVID-19 or that they might be a source of infection in the U.S.
Unfortunately, even with this knowledge, we’ve seen an upswing in pet owners abandoning their furry family members at local shelters out of fear of contracting the virus from their animals.
While there are Coronaviruses that infect animals and people, this is rare.
To put your mind at ease, let’s break down the information we have. We’ll also discuss how we can protect ourselves and our pets from the virus.
More about Coronaviruses:
It’s important to understand that Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Some affect humans and others affect animals.
According to the CDC, “Some coronaviruses cause cold-like illnesses in people, while others cause illness in certain types of animals, such as cattle, camels, and bats. Some coronaviruses, such as canine and feline coronaviruses, only infect animals and do not infect humans.”
If we look back over the last few decades of viruses, diseases like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) are examples of diseases caused by coronaviruses that originated in animals and spread to people.
Even though this is what is suspected to have happened with the latest pandemic, we do not know the exact source of this virus.
How Can We Stay Healthy Around Animals?
Per the CDC, “In the United States, there is no evidence to suggest that any animals, including pets, livestock, or wildlife, might be a source of COVID-19 infection at this time.”
Because animals carry so many germs anyway, it’s always a good idea to practice healthy hygiene around your pets and other animals.
Here are some healthy tips to do each time you come into contact with animals:
- Wash your hands after petting, and touching their food, waste, or supplies.
- Clean up after your pets properly and bathe them when appropriate.
- Make sure your animals get regular check-ups with us and always ask if there are any questions.
- Avoid playing with or touching other animals and their supplies, as well.
How Our Pets Can Keep Us Healthy
If you are a pet owner, you already know the benefits of owning a pet.
Research shows that dogs, cats, and other pets reduce anxiety, lower stress, and increase happiness for their owners. They serve as wonderful companions, especially when we are cooped up at home!
Having a dog is also a great excuse for frequent walks and physical activity while maintaining a safe distance from others during this time.
Make the most out of being at home and enjoy this time with your pet! Play Frisbee in the backyard, teach them a new trick, or play fetch with your furry friend!
